IISER Pune FREE Webinar on "Randomness In Biological Evolution" on 13 May 2021

Overview

‘MANAV-The Human Atlas Initiative’ is a project funded by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, co-funded by Persistent Systems Limited (PSL), and implemented through the National Centre of Cell Science (NCCS), Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research (IISER-Pune) and PSL, Pune. MANAV has invited the application for The Webinar on "Randomness In Biological Evolution". This webinar is under the Data Science webinar series.

Abstract of talk

Evolution is responsible for the great diversity in life that we see today on earth. While the role of natural selection in evolution is widely known, it is not well appreciated that evolution is, for the most part, a random process. Random events such as mutations and reproduction in small populations, and fluctuating environments play a key role in shaping the evolutionary trajectories. In this talk, the speaker will describe some classic experiments that demonstrated randomness in evolution and its consequences, and discuss how one builds stochastic models to understand evolutionary dynamics.
